Group Support

Teams should designate at least two people (no more than three) to discuss their collaborative projects with a consultant in the Writing Center. Consultations take place in the main Writing Center in 4120 Smith Lab. Each Consultation is 45 minutes.

Writing Groups run from the second or third week of each term to right before finals. We offer support for STEP proposals, grants, dissertations, MA theses, and more. When registering, three types of writing groups are available: accountability groups, feedback groups, and online groups.

Writing Group Options:

Are you struggling with meeting deadlines or are unable to set aside time to write? Then, the in-person accountability group is for you! A writing center facilitator will share writing resources, offer time management suggestions, and provide other resources for long-term writing projects. However, this group will center on setting and meeting weekly goals with minimal intervention on the part of the facilitator (unless requested!) So, if you need support while you finish that dissertation chapter but also value time to write, please consider this group. Accountability groups will run all semester and comprise agenda setting and writing at a regular time and place with a consistent group of other committed writers.

Are you a postdoc or Ph.D. candidate struggling to meeting deadlines-- from grant proposals to dissertations to journal articles-- or unable to set aside time to write? Do you want support but can't come to campus regularly? Then, the online accountability group is for you! Online groups will run all semester. Video Lessons on topics related to the writing process, writing motivation, and writing strategies, are posted each week. Group members must participate each week by watching the video lesson, completing an optional assignment, participating in the discussion thread, or browsing the resources on the course site.

Looking for feedback on your writing? Want to see how other scholars on campus write for various audiences?  The group will meet weekly throughout the fall and be comprised of writers from a variety of disciplines and led by a facilitator from the OSU Writing Center. In addition to gaining valuable feedback on your writing, you will gain skills in reading and responding to others' writing, skills that you can take with you into later teaching and collaborative writing projects. This group is explicitly for those who want to both receive feedback and learn about the process of giving feedback to colleagues across the disciplines. The group will run through our scheduling software, WCOnline (osu.mywconline.com).

Are you interested in Writing Groups? Here's

what you need to know:

When registering, you will be asked to indicate your ranked-order of preference for the writing group(s) you would like to join. Please note, acceptance will be based on a first-come first-serve basis; past group attendance will also be taken into consideration. You will be informed if you have been assigned a group, via email and then contacted by your facilitator shortly before the first meeting. Start and end dates are included below with meeting times and group descriptions. Open writing hours are flexible and registration is not required, however, we would like to track general interest in this new service so please include it in your ranked preference. All remaining applicants will be put on a wait-list to be contacted if space opens up in that group. If you are looking for more immediate support, please sign-up for an individual consultation at osu.mywconline.com. Individual consultations are open to undergraduate and graduate students, postdocs, staff, and faculty.
