Individual Writing Support

Our services have been moved online for the rest of the semester due to COVID-19. Writers looking for consultations can get them in two ways:

  • Schedule a Drop Off session: writers can upload their writing along with a few questions or concerns they would like a consultant to address. Consultants will provide feedback, and upload the document in 24-48 hours.
  • Schedule an Online Live Chat session: writers can upload a document and chat live with a consultant

Appointments can be made as before through our scheduling system.

For further information about how our online services work, see our instruction pages for our Drop Off and Online Live Chat Consultations.

If you have any difficulty, please contact CSTW-WritingCenter@osu.edu for support.

We offer two online consultation types, Live Chat (real-time, face-to-face) and Drop Off (asynchronous). Like our in-person sessions, both forms of online consultations focus on collaboration between participants. Despite the different mode of communication, the expectations and policies of our more traditional sessions apply to online sessions equally.

Live-Chat Sessions:

Online live chat sessions are ideal if you cannot be physically present for an appointment (for instance, if you are out of town, or live far from campus). Sessions are conducted in real-time through WCOnline. You have the choice to use video chat, voice chat, or live chat (typing, without video or voice). The chat window has a shared screen. You can upload a document to the live chat, and you and your consultant will be able to view the document together on the shared screen. This way, you will be able to see any annotations your consultant makes, and vice versa.

Live-Chat Sessions are interactive. Unlike Drop-Off Sessions, consultants will not provide comments unless the client is present at the appointed time and active in the session.

Drop-Off Sessions:

Drop-off sessions are our only sessions that do not take place in real time. You will upload your document to WCOnline before the appointment start time. Instructions are available for uploading a file. Your consultant will make comments in the document itself (usually line comments in the margins) and will upload the document with their comments to WCOnline within 24 hours (although it may take longer if it is a university holiday). You will receive an email from WCOnline that your comments are ready to be viewed. Instructions are available for viewing your consultant's comments.

Group Writing Support

At the Writing Center, we offer three different writing groups:

  1.  Accountability groups will run all semester and comprise agenda setting and writing at a regular time and place with a consistent group of other committed writers.
  2. Feedback groups will run the full length of the semester, with an opportunity for individuals to be placed  mid-semester. All writers will both receive AND provide feedback. All writers will be given the opportunity to have their own writing reviewed twice during the sessions. All writers will also learn how to recognize and focus on healthy writing habits and patterns both in their own writing as through the writing of other group members. Attendance is required.
  3. Online groups will run all semester. Video Lessons on topics related to the writing process, writing motivation, and writing strategies, are posted each week. Group members must participate each week by watching the video lesson, completing an optional assignment, participating in the discussion thread, or browsing the resources on the course site.

Policies:

Teams should designate at least two people (no more than three) to discuss their collaborative projects with a consultant in the Writing Center.

Make an appointment:

Appointments are made via WCOnline.

  1. Briefly describe the project
  2. Note that it is a team project
  3. Include the course title and the name of your project's team members.

The Writing Center staff will not work with just one representative on a team project during a session, except, of course, on that individual's writing. All other portions of the project must have the author present.
