Spotlight: Lori

Lori

1) Tell me about yourself…. What are you studying? What year are you?

I'm a biological anthropologist who specializes in bioarchaeology and forensic anthropology.  I primarily focus on the impact of structural violence on marginalized populations in the industrial era United States. I just finished my PhD this semester.

2) What do you like about working at the Writing Center?

I Iike working with new clients, I like giving people the tools and confidence they need to grow as writers, I like seeing what other scholars are researching, and I really like my colleagues. I have the BEST colleagues at the Writing Center.

3) What is your favorite book?

This is an impossible question to answer. There are so many books I love for so many reasons. But the The Year of the Flood (the entire MaddAddam series, actually) is near the top of my list.

4) When you're struggling with writing, what do you do?

Something else. I bake, I do laundry, or I watch Netflix to reset my brain. Then I come back and do listing, outlining, or something that generates ideas or structure.

5)What advice do you have for students?

DO NOT PROCRASTINATE!

6) What's your favorite part of speech/grammatical concept (either to talk about in sessions, or in general)?

Adverbs - because as Stephen King notes, "the road to hell is paved with adverbs."

7) What have you had the most fun writing?

Fiction, hands down.

8) What's your favorite assignment to work on with clients?

Fiction. Again, hands down. We don't see a lot of it in the Writing Center, unfortunately.

9) What is one one motto that you incorporate into your life or your writing?

See #6.

10) describe your perfect writing day

It would be a cool, sunny day where I had a lot of fresh, french press coffee on hand,  my cats slept all day (and didn't try to 'help' me write), and the writing flowed so smoothly and effortlessly that I got everything written that I wanted to for that particular day. (p.s. that day is fictional - it has never, ever happened!)
