Dr. Genie Nicole Giaimo and researchers Dr. Joseph Cheatle (Michigan State University), Dr. Christine Modey (University of Michigan) and Dr. Candace Hastings (Texas A&M University) have won the Summer 2018 International Writing Centers Award Research Grant for their proposal, "Creating a Document Repository: What Session Notes, Intake Forms, and Other Documents Can Tell Us About the Work of Writing Centers."
Dr. Giaimo and the research team have been investigating a two-million-word corpus comprised of session notes—the notes written by tutors after completing writing center sessions—to learn more about tutors' reflective practices, as well as whether or not training produces an effect in how peer tutors work with writers.
For the grant, they will develop a documentation repository that shares resources and assessment models with other writing center administrators. Writing centers are common support services, as well as research spaces, in higher education around the United States, and are becoming popular internationally. This repository will help administrators around the world to establish high-impact practices in their centers; however, it will also support research and praxis by providing reference corpora, as well as documentation models for assessment and training purposes. The award will be presented at the 2018 Writing Centers Association conference in Atlanta, this October.
