Internship Program

To register for the internship course (HUM COL 589: The Professional Writing Internship, 5 cr.), a student must

  • Apply before the end of the second full week of the quarter prior to the quarter of the internship.
  • Have completed 15 hours of the course requirements toward the minor, including HUM COL 450.
  • Submit an application form with a résumé, your portfolio of writing samples, and a cover letter to the Internship Coordinator (see instructions on the application form). You may submit this package while you are taking HUM COL 450.
  • Review the Frequently Asked Questions and Tips for a Good Internship.
  • Be approved after an interview with the Internship Coordinator.

We work closely with partners from business and industry, government agencies, nonprofits, and academic units to ensure a quality experience for students in the 10-week writing internship. In most cases, internships will be set up by the Internship Coordinator, so that the valuable experience is not limited to students who have contacts in the workplace. The coordinator also assures that the student receives mentoring and supervision and does substantive writing work at the placement site.
