Writing in the worlds of work
Through significant civic engagement, including scripting Columbus's Martin Luther King Day celebration, responding to a congressman's constituents, and developing a client's philanthropy campaign, professional writing minor students acquire contacts and credentials that help launch their careers upon graduation.
Prepare to address the various kinds of writing needed in today’s digital-age workplace, gain meaningful hands-on workplace experience, and add valuable credentials to your résumé by completing coursework and an internship for the Minor in Professional Writing. This minor is designed to supplement any undergraduate major.
When you’ve completed 15 hours of the writing minor’s coursework, including any version of HUM COL 450, you can submit the formal application, your résumé, and a writing portfolio for the capstone of our program, the professional writing internship.
The internship coordinator will work with you to place you with one of our more than 100 workplace partners in an industry related to your prospective field or career. You will work with writing professionals for 10-12 hours a week at a Columbus-area business, government agency, academic unit, or nonprofit organization during a regular academic quarter at Ohio State. You will also attend an internship class (HUM COL 589) for 2 hours each week, earning 5 hours of course credits.
