Introduction | Individual Consultations | Classroom Demonstrations | Group Workshops | WAC Brownbags
WAC can provide a customized group workshop for faculty and GTAs as well as offer training sessions for new instructors. Although we always customize a workshop or session to fit the clients’ needs, workshops usually entail a mix of lecture and active, hands-on learning. Popular workshop topics include: responding to student writing, developing writing assignments, using writing to teach course content, teaching writing and multimodal composition, and integrating diversity and writing instruction.
Sample Workshop:
Responding to Student Writing: We recently had the opportunity to do
a workshop for Sociology GTAs and faculty on how to effectively comment and grade
student essays. In the workshop, we focused on the differences between “responding”
and “grading” student essays. Participants looked at a sample writing assignment
for Sociology 101, in order to examine how an assignment’s stated goals and priorities
influences how we respond to student essays. Participants ranked the goals of
the assignment and then discussed how those goals would transfer to their responses
to student essays. After working in small groups, we led a large discussion where
participants were able to voice their reasons for prioritizing certain goals over
others.
“The students loved the workshop and so did I! Actually, I think it
was one of our most productive class sessions.”
