Classroom Demonstrations

Introduction | Individual Consultations | Classroom Demonstrations | Group Workshops | WAC Brownbags

With a classroom demonstration, we offer you a tailored, practical learning experience in incorporating writing into your course. After meeting with you in an individual consultation, we can work together to design a demonstration that fits your particular needs. In the past we have given demonstrations on a variety of topics including: peer response, incorporating secondary sources, developing arguments, and writing thesis statements, to mention a few.

Issue Analysis: Recently a WAC consultant met with an instructor of a 367 course who was concerned about helping her students with the writing components of his class. This assignment was particularly difficult for the students because they were asked to equally represent all sides of a highly debated issue, of their choice, affecting landscape. After meeting in an individual consultation, we designed a PowerPoint presentation and group activities to involve the students in the ways to approach an assignment such as this.

During the demonstration, the consultant led the students in a debate on a sample issue to help them approach this type of essay. After identifying the stakeholders in the sample issue, the students were split into two sides, each personifying one point of view. The consultant wrote the students’ responses on the board and, upon the completion of the debate, led them in finding connections among the various arguments as a means of organizing their own paper.

"Thank you for speaking to my classes. I’m sure it has helped them get a better idea of what and how they are expected to write."
