Based on interviews with educators, observations of tutorial sessions, and secondary educational research, this manual was designed to guide you through issues you might consider while developing, running, or participating in a literacy tutorial program.
We know from experience that such literacy programs can require much start-up energy, so it is our hope that this handbook will make both tutoring children and administering tutorial programs easier and more enjoyable. The third part offers tutors ideas for one-on-one and small-group literacy instruction by providing you with guidelines for:
Literacy program coordinators and tutors, though, should be aware of each other's issues, and both groups will benefit from reading the entire handbook. Tutors need to know the program's larger mission in order to offer insights on the program's progress and direction and to keep their tutoring practices consistent with program philosophy. Likewise, administration should be aware of tutoring strategies for the sake of evaluation, training, and redesign of the literacy program.
We hope that you'll take the lessons we've learned in order to form and re-form a literacy program that meets your mission and contexts. Best of luck in this worthy project!
