Scope of Service-Learning Outreach: Beyond the university walls are the many faces of the CSTW Literacy Outreach program. Among them: Columbus City Schools District children and university student volunteer tutor-mentors who meet weekly to read and write, and adult learners seeking self-improvement and educational advancement. The CSTW reach is wide.

CSTW 4157S Service-Learning Course

Like working with K-12 students? Enjoy social change writing to making a difference? Then we have a service-learning class for you!

CSTW 4157S, An Undergraduate Writing Experience for Social Change is an exciting new service-learning 3-credit course hosted by the Center for the Study and Teaching of Writing.

In this service-learning outreach course, students will learn the skills needed to effectively change the social climate of their world through writing, and discuss pertinent social issues such as urban education, diversity and privilege, poverty, and leadership.

“You also get to engage with elementary, middle, and high school students as well as reflect with your peers during discussions on the social issues,” says Dr. Nancy Hill-McClary, course instructor.

“We want OSU students in any subject area to enroll in CSTW 4157S course to begin to effect change through their participation in service-learning outreach. This collaborative will afford each student an opportunity to not only mentor youth, but learn about education issues affecting urban populations and teachers. Lastly, students will write as social change advocates. This is a once in a lifetime chance to personally impact a young person’s life and your own in a positive way!”  Dr. Hill McClary adds.

Students can enroll fall and spring semester. For more information, email Dr. Hill McClary at mcclary.16@osu.edu or call her at 614-688-5357.
